While these are all very valid Philly subjects, guitarist Nick Millevoi, a lifelong resident of the city, had a different idea: what if he wrote a hundred tunes and named them all after individual streets. And what if, instead of recording them as an album, he instead printed the notation as a songbook for other people to play. Thus was born the Streets of Philadelphia project.” -WXPN’s The Key
<p style="color: #262626; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">

<p style="color: #262626; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Following the 2019 release of the first volume of his Streets of Philadelphia songbook — which includes 25 compositions named after streets in the composer’s hometown — Nick Millevoi began documenting these compositions as performed by various ensembles. Conceptually inspired by the City of Brotherly Love and sonically inspired by the AACM, Louis Andriessen, Captain Beefheart, and John Zorn, this recording features a unique instrumentation of Veronica MJ on viola, Tom Kraines on cello, Dan Blacksberg on trombone, Anthony DiBartolo on marimba and persussion, and Millevoi on guitar. Documenting ten of the songbook’s compositions, the ensemble performs in various iterations from cello and marimba solos, to viola/trombone and trombone/guitar duets, to a string trio, and three full ensemble recordings.
<p style="color: #262626; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="color: #262626; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">nickmillevoi.bandcamp.com

Nick Millevoihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14323409195508026138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8896547890993364575.post-60859160507035625032019-12-20T11:46:00.000-05:002019-12-20T12:15:33.387-05:00Best shows of 2019
I got to present lots of new music in 2019, including collaborations both new and old. I released Desertion Trio's Twilight Time LP and my Streets of Philadelphia songbook, both of which are available on my Bandcamp page, including a super-deal *nice price* if you buy them together.
Hank Shteamer calls our version of "Twilight Time" "a stakes-raising celebration of the song’s eerie emotional pull."

Couldn't agree more with this idea: "The cool thing about covering a 60-year-old song is that you probably
couldn’t copy the original even if you wanted to, so you might as well
take it somewhere weird."

That's basically our M.O.!
Writer Jedd Beaudoin describes "Taboo": It's an impressive demonstration of restraint, a walk in the narrow line between twilight and darkness, an expression of frustration, of melancholy, of resolve and hope all at once. It's the full expression of the cautious optimism of the past and the contemporary sense that hope is something of a bygone era.

I'm excited to finally announce the release of Twilight Time, the newest LP by Desertion Trio, named for the 1958 hit by The Platters.

On this record, we take on our influences directly, covering songs
associated with popular artists from the 1950s and 60s such as The
Platters, Santo & Johnny, and Gene Pitney, as well as exotica
godfather Les Baxter and space age record producer Joe Meek in our
patented style.

Along with Johnny DeBlase and Kevin Shea, we enlisted our good friends
Tara Middleton, the commanding lead singer of the Sun Ra Arkestra, and
Ron Stabinsky, keyboard wiz for the Meat Puppets and Mostly Other People
Do the Killing, to help us fill out these songs.

The album will be released on April 26 by Long Song Records on limited edition 180g green vinyl.

Pre-orders (and track listing!) are available now at nickmillevoi.bandcamp.com.

"His sounds conjure emotions stoked by ephemeral sorts of nostalgia. He’s
as much a jazz musician as he is a rock player, and though he’s dug
into both traditions he’s definitely found his sweet spot leading the
instrumental Desertion Trio...Together they forge a
soothing hybrid of post-Crazy Horse grind, Ennio Morricone
spaghetti-western ambience, and atmosphere-drenched exotica...

The band’s tunefulness and delicate touch—even during its most punishing
passages—have a universal profundity that I’ve been unable to resist."
"With his Desertion Trio, Millevoi churns over dusty tones reminiscent of
a Spaghetti Western soundtrack, if Ennio Morricone chose to spotlight
an appreciation for high-minded jazz scaffolding and noodling psych-rock
jams."
Midtown Tilt is also referred to as "highly satisfying."

Here's the review:
Gabriel Jermaine Vanlandingham Dunn at JazzRightNow.com says:

"With an intro that I’d love to sample, or
at least juggle in my DJ sets, and a mash-up of Spaghetti
Western-influenced guitar, vibrato organ, and choppy but steady rhythm,
“Numbers Maker” is one of my favorite compositions of the past year."
S. Victor Aaron at SomethingElseReviews.com says:

"Desertion’s combination of Crazy Horse rough edges, surf music, psych
blues and Western movie soundtrack leanings is truly a throwback to
lyric-less rock of the 60s, even if the styles informing this music
might have never been quite blended this way."
